Man Overboard!!!! This is a shituation us cruisers hope that we'll never have to face. Training for this possibility though is very important so I walk Marie through it step-by-step. This was very much "basic training" with perfect conditions and pretty unrealistic but still... Next time we'll step it up a bit but until then we'd love to hear from you, your personal experiences, constructive criticisms or any valuable tips.
Thanks and Enjoi

No, this is just a drill guys. As a sailing couple,Β two people in the boat, your worst nightmare isΒ Β
going to be a man overboard situation. You hearΒ terrible stories of people who have gone overboard andΒ Β
someone was off watch and sleeping and they wokeΒ up to find they were alone and things like that.Β
Terrible Terrible stories. We all obviously don'tΒ want to live through that and we take precautions.Β Β
One of the precautions that's quite necessary isΒ to actually practice the situation man overboard,
so we're going to do that today. Marie'sΒ never done it which is bad on my part andΒ Β
personally i haven't done it for a couple ofΒ years either. I was sailing solo a lot before thisΒ Β
and obviously there's no point learning howΒ to do a man overboard drill when you're aloneΒ Β
so we're gonna do that today. We're gonna walkΒ you guys through it and at the same time walkΒ Β
us through you know so obviously weΒ probably make some mistakes andΒ Β
there's a lot of you out there thatΒ are more experienced than either of usΒ Β
so really appreciate in the comments if youΒ would hey give some constructive criticism orΒ Β
advice don't just say you guys are idiots you'reΒ all gonna die please be constructive tell us ofΒ Β
your the way you do it maybe if somethingΒ has happened to you if something's a realΒ Β
man overboard situation and you've done itΒ and you've learned what really really worksΒ Β
i'm going to do what i've learned what i think isΒ good and uh we'll show you guys enjoy the videoΒ Β
last year i never really think about it i'm a bitΒ innocent i think and this winter we were in franceΒ Β
and i watched a movie about that super early wouldΒ start it was really like not real but so i startΒ Β
to think about that if one day like i wake up inΒ the night when he's doing the watch and he justΒ Β
fell overboard and i am alone on the boat orΒ even if he was yelling in the night and i haveΒ Β
to do something and yeah so i'm a bit scared toΒ think about it even if it's an exercise like toΒ Β
imagine that it's quite a lot of pressure forΒ me but i think it's important we are advertisingΒ Β
okay so what we're going to do is throw aΒ fender overboard that's going to be the personΒ Β
and then we're going to go through the steps andΒ i'm going to say them now the steps that i wouldΒ Β
do in a man overboard situation so obviously theΒ the main point is locate the person in the waterΒ Β
with your eyes i mean you can use technologicalΒ things push man overboard buttons whatever butΒ Β
if you've got you lock your eyes on the personΒ the head in the water this is the best thingΒ Β
to do the way to help that is to throw otherΒ things in the water so you've got more things toΒ Β
visually group so it will throw other fendersΒ in the water anything that floats basicallyΒ Β
that at hand will throw in the water we have aΒ dan boy which is this long pole with a flag onΒ Β
it that'll go in the water first because it's outΒ of the water it's got a flag that's a meter highΒ Β
so once that's done we willΒ keep the eye on the personΒ Β
while moving to the next step which willΒ be in this case getting the engine runningΒ Β
the engine running first we're in relatively flatΒ water calm water in this situation we would justΒ Β
fill the head sail and motor back to the personΒ in the water obviously in different conditionsΒ Β
he might not be able to do that but in thisΒ condition that's what we're doing but instead ofΒ Β
furling the head sail first and then getting theΒ engine going i would do it the other way so thatΒ Β
we know the engine is going before we get rid ofΒ the sail if for some reason the engine wouldn't goΒ Β
we would need to sail back and then we'd needΒ the sail so first engine then further sailΒ Β
and while doing all this furling all thatΒ the eyes have got to be on the personΒ Β
obviously you have to look what you're doing aΒ little bit but as much as possible eyes on theΒ Β
purse in the water so it might mean looking overΒ your shoulder but as much as possible because theΒ Β
amount of drift and the distance that you gainΒ in these two three minutes is amazing and iΒ Β
think it's going to blow everyone away when youΒ try it yourself it's pretty crazy and obviouslyΒ Β
a small head in the waves it's very difficult toΒ see so you need to try and keep like that's whereΒ Β
they are that's where they are that's where theyΒ are very very important so get the engine goingΒ Β
get the sail down get the boat turned around andΒ heading back towards them and just eyes on eyes onΒ Β
that's sort of it i have a man overboardΒ button on my gps but it's downstairsΒ Β
i am not going to go and do that i don't knowΒ maybe you guys think that's a good idea i thinkΒ Β
the valuable seconds i'd be downstairs pushingΒ that button and not having my eyes on the personΒ Β
uh yeah i think you know in a panic situationΒ you have to take you know you just have toΒ Β
do what you know with the cards that you dealtΒ with and i think that would be a one that iΒ Β
wouldn't go for so yeah we're going to do thisΒ now we're going to throw a fender in the waterΒ Β
and we're going to run through it simply we'reΒ not going to do a i'm going to surprise marieΒ Β
we're going to just walk through it and thisΒ is how we do it we'll go back collect all theΒ Β
clutter that we're throwing in the water and thenΒ we'll probably do another one more surprise styleΒ Β
okay so we are currently cruising along just underΒ head sail i've got the boat in easy mode obviouslyΒ Β
no mainsail up uh we're out in the middle ofΒ nowhere the sea is very calm we're doing fiveΒ Β
knots this is sort of ideal training conditionsΒ okay so let's get going so you're going to throwΒ Β
yourself overboard all right you throwΒ yourself overboard anytime you're ready okay
watch watch so then the damn boy's going next
all right damn boy
it's in see how it works see how the damn boyΒ works that's perfect all right try that yeah
so yeah you're still watching the person let's seeΒ how much easier it is now we've got three peopleΒ Β
throw that one overboardΒ right now we've got a lineΒ Β
we've got a line of people in theΒ water and it's much easier to seeΒ Β
four things especially the orange flagΒ okay now start the engine start the engine
okay get it going forwards
all right you can already turn the older pilot off
i'll be firing the sail okay turn this aroundΒ and keep your eyes on the people still thereΒ Β
perfect turn around give moreΒ power you need to go fast
okay full power okay we've got the people hereΒ well one person all right straighten up straightΒ Β
not straighten up you're going to go too farΒ okay so now we can see everything in front of us
so how did that go but that was okay but yeahΒ it's quite uh scary to see at which speed youΒ Β
can raise someone super far and yeah like weΒ had like the whole line of things we throw aboutΒ Β
really far apart say i can imagine that it'sΒ really good to have the maximum things in theΒ Β
water to you can watch it because just one personΒ it's super hard to see it's getting super fastΒ Β
okay so we've got everything back in weΒ got the man overboard and all the otherΒ Β
bits and pieces and yeah like marie said youΒ can really see the difference if there's aΒ Β
bunch of things floating in the water ifΒ there's just one pretty crazy to see thisΒ Β
the distance you put that's standingΒ still we're cruising on at five knotsΒ Β
by the time you get the sailfield the engineΒ on uh and this is a situation that we knewΒ Β
was going to happen you know so if someone'sΒ sleeping or have to come up from downstairsΒ Β
big situation and we won't even talk about nightΒ situations that's a whole different kettle of fish
also by the time we got back the distance thatΒ spread apart that's quite amazing obviouslyΒ Β
different things in the water different sizeΒ things some get blown by the wind the dam boyΒ Β
for example it's skinny little pole it doesn'tΒ really move so it's probably going to stay nearestΒ Β
the human the human's also going to be mostlyΒ underwater things like fenders or this waterΒ Β
bottle we're through it's floating so the windΒ pushes it faster but regardless you know thatΒ Β
it's still within that radius of of debris inΒ the water as your human that you're searching forΒ Β
so that was just a walkthrough we're going toΒ do another one now where we just do the sameΒ Β
thing no stress involved but it'll just be oneΒ of us and we'll do one each so it's just oneΒ Β
of us doing all the things this time we sharedΒ their duties you know but that would never beΒ Β
realistic because there's only two of us on theΒ boat and if one goes overboard one person hasΒ Β
to do all of that so we're gonna train that nextΒ i noticed that the flag on the standby which isΒ Β
the most important thing and it did still work weΒ could still see it the best from all of the thingsΒ Β
but it the top was taped up and i guessΒ that was to stop it flapping up on theΒ Β
on the pole but so in the water this flag didn'tΒ open properly it just came sort of half open likeΒ Β
this so obviously you're going to see it much moreΒ if it's completely open and flapping in the windΒ Β
so just alone this this training exercise to findΒ that is a big thing so like i don't know who'dΒ Β
put this tape on there but it's been a whileΒ and i should have checked this before my bad
yep just just open it all the way let it goΒ don't worry how it feels keep looking that's itΒ Β
perfect good stuff are youΒ still watching them awesomeΒ Β
good stuff there you go getΒ it going forwards yeah auto
around pilot tough so far awesome a bit more speed
keep watching them
still see them yeah stand upΒ on the side if you have to okay
am i gonna die no i hope no you're gonna get meΒ yeah i think i'm pretty confident you are swimmingΒ Β
good i hope yeah i'm sorry good i think thereΒ might be a shark after me though oh no shark here
yeah yeah
okay there's the damn boy there's the otherΒ boy there's the water bottle and this is meΒ Β
straight up in front okay yeah slow rightΒ down now slow right now neutral reallyΒ Β
okay there you go now come alongside and grab me
there i am
it's okay now that was wellΒ done good stuff so how was that
that's okay but it's i can imagine that in aΒ real situation is really even more distanceΒ Β
and more stress okay murray did reallyΒ really well then she did all the processesΒ Β
obviously you know you can say well thereΒ was no panic there's no situation butΒ Β
training is about that it's about learning theΒ processes learning the steps we don't have toΒ Β
make it a panic situation um obviously if inΒ a real situation you would panic but hopefullyΒ Β
maria will go back to these steps she's learnedΒ in a non-panic situation and after panicking forΒ Β
a second these steps will come back and she'llΒ be like okay i have to do this i have to do thisΒ Β
after this and that's what it's about we need toΒ practice more but it's already she knows the stepsΒ Β
and this is the good thing and i'm learning tooΒ so it's awesome so i'm going to have a turn next
one
oh she's going fast
see how good
okay
i hope she's all right shark'sΒ not chasing us pretty sharky here
i was dreaming so good too we're goingΒ to stop on a beach have a barbecue
head over board you're takingΒ care of your hats on me yeahΒ Β
yeah all right i can see i can see it's all good
that dan boy is really visible okay but nowΒ there's some white caps so it's differentΒ Β
than before the white caps actually make itΒ harder because there's more troughs and peaksΒ Β
okay i can see it this is the debris startingΒ i can see all these four or five things iΒ Β
threw in the water and marie would be theΒ furthest away one but it's still all groupsΒ Β
and from here i would hear her yelling andΒ screaming at me probably if it was dark evenΒ Β
i'm close enough now i know i'm withinΒ the radius of where she went in the waterΒ Β
she would probably yell orΒ whistle or something and i'd knowΒ Β
you know we're close now you know that's theΒ main thing obviously i got it turned aroundΒ Β
quicker than you would in a normal situation andΒ all that but this is basic training basic training
so this one here the danboyΒ is by far the biggest helpΒ Β
it is very very visible from a long way becauseΒ it's out of the water and it's it's in between theΒ Β
up and down waves you still see the flag so thisΒ is by far the most important one to get in firstΒ Β
closest to the victim um if they've you know ifΒ they're still conscious and swimming they canΒ Β
actually swim to it because they can see it andΒ you can see it and it's the best thing by far
is
okay well i guess that went pretty well rightΒ yeah yeah that's just it more easy than what i wasΒ Β
expecting like i know it's gonna be more stressfulΒ but the yeah that was okay no you reacted reallyΒ Β
good yeah as i said this is a training exerciseΒ it's about getting the steps and the processes andΒ Β
i think it went good learned a couple of thingsΒ it's really good to visualize how far things goΒ Β
this is calm water obviously we've gotΒ 15 knots of wind few white caps butΒ Β
not you know there's a swell actually hereΒ but it's a long period there's not much chopΒ Β
so yeah it's good we're in a small boat we're lowΒ down so obviously your visibility is restrictedΒ Β
compared to in a bigger boat you're sitting higherΒ up so you've got a more longer distance into theΒ Β
sea but this is what it is it's a it's a veryΒ safe boat though i'm not really afraid of usΒ Β
getting tipped out the open transom it's veryΒ safe the cables over the back come up to my chestΒ Β
for for example a lot of people fall overboardΒ when they're having a pee overboard but becauseΒ Β
they have to stand up on the sides andΒ the safety rails only go up to their kneesΒ Β
a wave hits them and they go overboard i feel veryΒ safe in this boat and also we can do everythingΒ Β
from the cockpit reefing and everything so weΒ don't really need to go forward and that's whereΒ Β
the more dangerous with the pitching and bouncingΒ but still it can always happen and it's good toΒ Β
train for it i think you did good um i thinkΒ the training of driving the boat that's goodΒ Β
for you um knowing how to feel really fast get theΒ sail down obviously if we had the mainsail up inΒ Β
that situation i would just center it and stillΒ motor back depending on how strong the wind wasΒ Β
this mainsail comes down very fast so that couldΒ be an option we'll practice next time is also withΒ Β
the mainsail so that she can get rid of theΒ halyard and drop the mainsail and then motorΒ Β
back that way anyway i think it went pretty goodΒ hope you guys enjoyed it as i said give us someΒ Β
of your own tips i'm just watchingΒ where we're going we're still got aΒ Β
couple of miles till we get to the island giveΒ us some of your own tips experiences hopefullyΒ Β
good experiences but uh we can all learn fromΒ bad experiences too obviously that's the bestΒ Β
learning is sometimes you have to go throughΒ them and uh we'd like to hear from you andΒ Β
especially anything we can do to be safer andΒ actually just enjoy our cruising right that'sΒ Β
what it's about feeling safe feeling secure andΒ out here loving life you know the world's a veryΒ Β
it's actually a very safe place but we haveΒ the feeling it's a very unsafe place especiallyΒ Β
now with cove and all that but the point isΒ know the risks weigh up the risks and rewardsΒ Β
and and live life as much as you can and as goodΒ as you can and that's what we're trying to doΒ Β
and uh if we can train things like this to makeΒ it even more secure then awesome it's a great dayΒ Β
for it we had fun i saw your amazing talent ofΒ actor oh yeah yeah i'm pretty good huh oh yeahΒ Β
your screams are pretty good though i actuallyΒ was scared down there a little bit thank you toΒ Β
our patrons um we had a couple new ones lastΒ week very very cool also had a couple um stopΒ Β
with the contributions they were nice enough toΒ write to me and say due to covert their financialΒ Β
situations changed and well totally understandableΒ obviously you've got kids mortgages payments lostΒ Β
jobs whatever we're we're doing fine i'm notΒ expecting a handout from patreon it's more aboutΒ Β
you guys that are enjoying our content enoughΒ willing to put some money towards the contentΒ Β
so whatever you guys give us we're more than happyΒ with it's just a confirmation that you enjoy ourΒ Β
content we are not more in need than anyone elseΒ probably less so we can be self-sufficient hereΒ Β
so thank you very much patrons very very coolΒ and uh we'll see you next week still here in rotiΒ Β
i don't know what we're doing but roti isΒ freaking amazing and we're loving it here soΒ Β
we're gonna keep showing you these cool uhΒ things and uh yeah see you next sunday bye
