GETTING PRIMAL and hitting stuff in the Dismal Swamp!! Sailboat Living with SailAway Ep. 3 Travel Vlog - Our new sailboat delivery continues as we bump logs in the Great Dismal Swamp in the Intracoastal Waterway, sail big winds in the Pamlico Sound, and try our hand at sailing in the dark (not the first time, won't be the last) as we navigate the Alligator River in the dark. All part of living on a sailboat.

In this episode, we travel from norfolk virginia down through the dismal swamp canal and onward to belhaven north carolina
We entered the lock the next morning bright and early and as the water, was filling up
We made friends with the motor yacht in front of us who we ended up following all the way to elizabeth city
storms are coming
Are you prepared
Are you prepared yeah you ready for it good
You're, gonna man the helm, okay, grab the whole thing
Lovely, not the best spot to get stuck in a storm
The menfolk with their chests out, that's right, yeah it's our way to do the dismal you got to get primitive
Rivers danger dove are you enjoying your cruise so far
Okay, I'll take that as very, well thank you it's pretty darn peaceful i gotta say
You can, get past the fact that when you flush the toilet it doesn't appear that you're actually accomplishing anything
because the water is
pretty gross
I'm up here on the bow seat
Kind of keeping an eye out, while chris drives
You can, see a few dead heads sticking up or logs floating but, some of them are just
Below the surface and you don't know, until you hear a Thump feeling
you know a
Little bit alarming but
We're, still afloat so i guess guess we're all right
We're in the second lock now deep creek
Dismal swamp canal I think it's called southport lock maybe
Pretty, good passage but, i gotta say we bumped a lot
And i know that does happen but, like, okay, we avoided everything, we saw on the surface
Which, was a lot and all the stuff that, we hit was submerged probably
five or six
Good thumps one of which took out our knot meter i think i mentioned that before but
I'll take that thing apart, when we finally stop for the night
Hopefully, it's just a paddle but
It's really pretty, but i'm kind of glad to be out of there i know
none of those thumps were
Did any real damage hopefully
But i'm just kind of averse to
hitting the bottom of things with the bottom of my boat...the top of things with the bottom of my boat...I don't like to hit things.
The dock, we stayed at that night, was owned by a seafood supply company and as long as you sign a
Waiver saying that, you'll eat at one of the restaurants downtown you get to stay for free so, we did and we did
ready
Ready for the storm
Too bad we didn't get that rodeo on camera
farewell, we are leaving hopefully elizabeth city
Realize that the belhaven we're trying to get to
Considering that it's already 9 oclock
Well the biggest enemies of sailing is a schedule get a lot of trouble if you
Force yourself to being a schedule because it
Tends to make you go out
Maybe, when you shouldn't or
not take the weather seriously enough
we've got plenty of time so
Anyway, we we just kind of have a little fire drill get down on the dock
thought the bridge, was gonna open and then, we have to wait another half hour, turns out we probably could've just asked it to open after 9
At least it was a motivator and got us moving
Yeah, we got got through the drawbridge
and just motoring along on this lovely
North, carolina, summer day, we made fake eggs, this morning they weren't fake, egg, they, were just egg, whites
Yeah, we're trying to
Save space in a refrigerator
carton of egg stuff it wasn't that bad
yeah
you look so dapper today
You know it says he likes to be formal but he still likes to party
Rivers who's steering the boat?! Who's steering the boat?
the bridge closing even though, we didn't get it opening
It's the alligator river swing, bridge on-demand
more men die leaking off the back of boats
First try
was really, good more dismal than the dismal swamp
So we're on the alligator river pongo river now
It's all marked clearly on the chart it's straight shot
Next time on sailing sv layla
