there are babies yeah finally got around
to working on the headliner project I
put it into a grid so I could take each
piece down and I'll show you that on
another video but I've got the center
board and I didn't want to take up a lot
of room but I wanted to add a lot of
light to the cabin so I went with the
hell of marine surface mounted strip
lights the LEDs now these come I got
this in the white and the red there's
about five things you really need to
know about LED lights and I'm gonna go
over those with you now now one of the
things here is I wanted like I said I
want to be able to take this down so I
used Spade connectors when I hook the
wires up so I could unplug them and take
the strip down and get into the other
things now important thing is it's
simple the wire I mean look at here's
what I did all right so here you can see
guys these are the these are the wires
coming from the old light and here are
my two new lights it's just as simple as
taking the blacks and putting in one end
of this Spade connector and the Reds and
to the other end of the Spade connector
and I did alternating now I can take my
lights down and work on things and it
all tucks up inside here very nicely and
since the fixture is reverse polarity
protected I don't need to worry if
somewhere down the line this gets a
little mixed up the worst that's going
to happen is the lights not going to go
on it's not going to burn anything out
so that's one of the first things you
need to know is it reverse polarity
protected the worst that's going to
happen is if you have it hooked up wrong
is the lights not going to go on it's
not going to burn out the lights or burn
out the fixture the next thing is
warranty well these have got a five-year
warranty
most lights and fixtures you don't have
a warranty at all
the other thing is the switch and this
is really critical most of the time the
lights are gonna or the fixture is going
to deteriorate because it has a standard
type of toggle switch like this
well those we're out on the he'll a
marine light the switch is totally in
case let me show you a little closer see
this switch is completely enclosed it's
completely sealed here's the other part
of it here I took this off so you could
see how this works what this is is a
reed switch and there's a little magnet
in this part of the switch see that
little dot and that moves across a
printed circuit board assembly which
turns it on now here's kind of an
exaggerated view of how this works
you
as the magnet moves
turn the white on in the center that's
off and the other direction is the red
so you see other LED fixtures might be
sealed but the switch is not this is a
completely sealed switch so now we're
just going to put that back on there so
you can see all right well it's on the
red the white and off that's of major
importance now the next important thing
to know is what is the IP of the fixture
it's not a computer its ingress
protection
most of the companies don't even state
what their IP is but the IP in ingress
protection is it's two numbers it's a
six well runs from one to six six being
the best and that's against solid things
like dust sand so this is a six the best
you can get the second number the seven
this is a 67 is for moisture now for
example a a five would be you get a
little spritz of water on it it's not
going to hurt anything
if it had a six index you could get
sprayed it wouldn't hurt it but it can't
be soaked now these you can use these
interior or exterior I happen to be
interior you know out in the cockpit or
something so you're washing the boat
down well with a7 which is the next one
means it can be sprayed from any angle
and it can be submerged for anywhere
from ten to thirty minutes without any
moisture getting in the next index would
be eight which means sprayed from any
angle and it can be submerged for
extended periods of time I don't know
what extended periods of time mean but
that's what I found on me and probably
four hours and I'll tell you this if you
use
this in your boat even if it's in the
cockpit or anything and it's submerged
in water for more than 30 minutes
you've probably got more problems in
just the water all right the next thing
we need to talk about guys is a CRI well
what is a CRI it's a color rendering
index what that is is the ability of the
LED to replicate light in color
accurately so let's say the Sun is a
hundred well an LED a quality LED is
going to be 80 to 90
these are 85 so foods going to be more
vibrant skin tone is going to be more
natural color is going to be more
realistic in general so an LED with
lower CRI let's say 75 or even an 80
well that's going to have more of a dull
washed out color to it the higher C our
eyes like this are used in surgical
applications art galleries where color
is very important offices now I live and
work on my boat so having a high CRI is
important for me to have that more
natural feeling to it now most LED
lights or LED companies they don't put
what their CRI is so with le with hella
marine you know what you're getting so
those basically are the five things that
you really need to know about LED
fixtures and lights the one I like is
the reverse polarity protection five
year warranty the switch this is
fantastic completely sealed switch the
IP ingress protection I know I've got a
good solid fixture here the CRI the
color rendering index
it's fantastic and you don't look at
this slim profile it's not taking up a
lot of room in the boat and look at the
difference here this is the lights I had
before
what I have now
by having this strip down the middle
I've eliminated a lot of the shadows
that you get from just the under
lighting here and so forth anyway guys
happy and safe boating do you your
family and friends
